Closing of a major campaign on sexual and reproductive health launched by SOFA and TOYA Foundation in the South

The initiative has raised the awareness of nearly 4,000 people in the South and Grand-Anse on sexual and reproductive health and gender-based violence.

On March 31, 2022, SOFA and TOYA Foundation completed a large awareness campaign and mobile clinics on sexual and reproductive health in the south of the country.

This initiative, which began on December 1st, 2021, has enabled more than 470 women to adhere to a planning method. At least 3,800 people also took part in group awareness sessions around the themes of « planning » and « Gender-based violence » as part of community mobilizations and mobile clinics carried out across the three municipalities targeted for this intervention, namely Aquin, Maniche and Abricots.

For the purposes of this campaign, ten (10) nurses and facilitators were trained. They helped to carry out eighteen (18) mobile clinics in the three (3) communes of interventions mentioned above. Five hundred (500) women and young girls from the localities of Aquin, Maniche, Sarjotte, Nan Pandye, etc., took the opportunity to consult a gynecologist free of charge and adhere to a planning method.

Among the short term planning methods, more than forty thousand (40,000) condoms were distributed, as well as three hundred and three (303) depo provera and forty-three (43) packs of contraceptive pills. Ten (10) IUDs and one hundred and thirteen (113) implants were placed among the long-acting methods.

Seven (7) women and adolescent survivors of gender-based violence were redirected to the Douvanjou Center of SOFA in Abricots and other institutions involved in the medical and legal-legal fields for the support required by these cases. Participants benefited from awareness sessions, particularly in schools and markets. 67% of the listeners were young girls. Clichés and factually incorrect ideas about planning, but also the social roles traditionally reserved for women were discussed.

At the end of the campaign, a young girls’ club was born in Abricots. The operation of this club will be ensured by SOFA to provide the young girls of this locality with leisure and development activities.

The campaign has received support from the International Planned Parenthood Federation (IPPF). Activities were monitored and evaluated by the Collective of Haitian Women.
